Vary Technology: Empowering Green Circular Economy

18 Mar 2024

In recent years, there has been explosive growth in the new energy vehicle market in our country, and now, a wave of "retirement tide" of new energy batteries is approaching. With complex chemical compositions containing various heavy metals, improper handling of retired batteries can pose environmental hazards. So, what should be the fate of retired batteries?

How can we turn waste into treasure and achieve resource reuse? Hunan Vary Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Vary Technology) has provided its own answer.

Venturing into the Field of New Energy Solid Waste Recycling

Recently, the first set of efficient crushing and sorting equipment for waste lithium battery cathode sheets, independently developed and produced by Vary Technology, was sent to Miluo to facilitate environmentally friendly and efficient recycling and reuse of lithium battery materials.

According to reports, the equipment will be used in a project involving the dismantling and crushing sorting of 30,000 tons of scrapped lithium batteries. The project can process 3 tons of cathode sheets per hour, with a recovery rate (by weight) of black powder (lithium iron phosphate) ≥99%, with an aluminum content not exceeding 1%. "We separate out valuable non-ferrous metals from retired batteries with high economic value for recycling, achieving closed-loop utilization. The performance is close to that of original new materials but at a lower cost, thus reducing costs for customers and alleviating environmental burdens," said Ming Guoying, Chairman of Vary Technology, who is very optimistic about the prospects of solid waste resource utilization in the new energy field.

Currently, Vary Technology provides various technical equipment for the recycling of waste lithium-ion battery materials, meeting the requirements for retired lithium batteries and comprehensive recycling and treatment of battery industry waste. In addition to waste lithium batteries, the recycling and industrial application of solid waste in the new energy industry fields such as waste wind turbine blades, waste photovoltaic modules, and biomass are also progressing orderly.

Pioneering Innovative Development with Core Technologies

At Vary Technology's exhibition hall, you can learn in detail about the research and development journey of this company, which has been deeply engaged in solid waste disposal for 20 years and is a national-level specialized and new "little giant" enterprise.

In 2004, Vary Technology utilized a patent from Beihang University to establish a research and development project department for physical recycling equipment for printed circuit boards. In 2006, the first production line for the physical recycling treatment of circuit boards was put into operation, and the company was formally established and registered in the same year, marking the first step of mechanical crushing and sorting technology in the utilization of solid waste resources.

Based on this, Vary Technology further expanded into the field of electronic waste processing. In the recycling industry base of Haier in Qingdao, scrapped refrigerators were sent to the production line, where they underwent crushing, screening, sorting, and were finely separated into plastics, iron, stainless steel, copper, aluminum, and other products that can be reused. The entire process is fully automated, with no manual intervention required, and each production line can process 160 scrapped refrigerators per hour. This production line was independently developed by Vary Technology. As early as 2010, its technology and equipment for the harmless treatment and resource recovery of scrapped refrigerators were appraised by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology as "filling the domestic gap and reaching an advanced level." Currently, this technology and equipment serve more than 60 domestic brand enterprises including China Resources, Chengdu Environmental Protection, and TCL Technology, as well as customers in Europe and Africa.

It is estimated that for every ton of waste material recycled, an average of 4.12 tons of mineral resources are saved, 1.4 tons of standard coal energy is saved, and 3.72 tons of carbon dioxide emissions are reduced. Vary Technology has always adhered to low-carbon technology research and development, continuously extending mechanical crushing and sorting technology in the field of solid waste resource utilization, and has built the country's first mechanized dismantling production line for scrapped cars and the first domestically produced rapid car dismantling machine...

In 2015, Vary Technology initially entered the field of urban and rural solid waste resource utilization, introducing anaerobic pyrolysis technology and rapid aerobic composting technology, and built a 100-acre equipment manufacturing base in the same year.

Ming Guoying pointed to the model of the pyrolysis equipment in the exhibition hall and explained that organic solid waste is converted into reusable oil and carbon through anaerobic pyrolysis, and the entire process generates almost no waste gas. In 2013, Vary Technology initiated the research and development of pyrolysis equipment. After the first-generation machine was developed and used by itself, the equipment was continuously improved and iterated. In 2019, anaerobic pyrolysis technology and equipment were evaluated by the China Environmental Protection Industry Association and recognized as "providing an effective technical solution for the treatment and resource utilization of organic solid waste, with the scale of single-machine treatment and some technologies reaching the domestic leading level." In 2020, it was officially put on the market, with 50 sets of pyrolysis technology equipment put into production, and industrial applications in more than 20 organic solid waste resource utilization projects across the country, including oil sludge, sludge, waste tires, hazardous waste packaging, dye and paint waste, medical waste, etc., creating good economic and social benefits.

With mechanical crushing and sorting, anaerobic pyrolysis, and rapid aerobic composting as the core technologies, Vary Technology has established a "Blue Island Model" for comprehensive physical recovery of waste materials, an "Energy Island Model" that converts low-value organic matter into green energy products through chemical recovery, and an "Eco-Island Model" that returns agricultural and forestry waste to the soil and solid carbon, opening up an innovative development path for turning garbage into resources.

Becoming an "Incubator" for Industrial R&D Innovation

Vary Technology promotes the industrialization and application of technology through both research and development and operational services and extends the application of technology to project platform companies. Miluo Vary Electronic Waste Treatment Co., Ltd. is one of the first batch of national pilot dismantling enterprises for old-for-new home appliances, and Miluo Vary Scrap Automobile Co., Ltd. has become a national "urban mineral" demonstration project...

This is a microcosm of Vary Technology's research and development innovation and operational incubation. Daring to try, working hard to tackle problems, realizing innovative research and development from 0 to 1, demonstrating new products through self-operated projects, and then promoting them to the market, thereby incubating or activating one company after another, more than a dozen companies have been incubated from the "mother body" to become new platform companies.

"We are committed to being the 'mother company' of industrial R&D innovation, stirring up every industry with leading products and solutions," said Ming Guoying. The company has always prioritized research and development, with an annual investment of more than 10 million yuan, a research team of nearly 60 engineers, and has obtained more than 200 patents.

"With everything and with the world," currently, the network system for recycling waste materials is gradually improving, and the industry for recycled resources is accelerating aggregation and development.
